Lesson 1: What AI Is and Is Not

Distinguish generative AI language models from search engines and traditional software.

Generative AI is not an all-knowing brain, and it does not search the internet the way a search engine does. Instead, it is a pattern-prediction system trained on massive amounts of written text.

When you ask an AI tool a question, it predicts what words most likely follow your prompt based on patterns it learned. It creates plausible language. This means it is fantastic at drafting, organizing, and summarizing, but it has no personal concept of truth.

Always remember: Search engines show you where information lives. AI drafts language for you to verify.

Hands-On Workplace Exercise

Write down one repetitive writing task you handle each week. Identify which part is formatting (good for AI) vs. which part requires real human context.

Knowledge Check

Test your understanding with this short self-check. Feedback is instant.
