Lesson 3: Spotting AI Hallucinations & Fact-Checking

Recognize plausible-sounding errors, invented numbers, and fabricated regulations.

Large language models do not feel doubt. When an AI does not know an answer, it frequently generates plausible-sounding text that is completely false. This phenomenon is known as a hallucination.

AI may invent statute numbers, quote non-existent company policies, or cite fabricated research studies with realistic author names.

The 3-Finger Fact-Check Rule:

  1. Check every number, date, and dollar amount.
  2. Verify every named law, policy, or legal code on an official .gov website.
  3. Test every web link before clicking or sharing.

Hands-On Workplace Exercise

Ask an AI for the deadline to file unemployment in your state. Then verify that exact deadline on your state's official department of labor portal.
