Job description
The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts. The Office of Management, Analysis, and Planning (OMAP) is seeking a skilled and proactive Business Intelligence Analyst to transform complex operational data into actionable dashboards, automated reporting pipelines, and strategic insights. Working at the intersection of data engineering and visual analytics, this role supports executive leadership and operational divisions by ensuring high-integrity, real-time visibility into agency performance, compliance metrics, and strategic initiatives. Responsibilities: Business Intelligence & Automated Reporting: • Write, optimize, and maintain complex SQL queries across relational databases and centralized data warehouses to extract, transform, and validate operational records. • Design, build, and maintain automated scheduled data pipelines and executive dashboards using tools like Tableau, Python (Dash), or Power BI. • Establish and monitor automated data validation scripts to proactively identify system entry gaps, data discrepancies, or pipeline failures. Performance Metrics & Analytics: • Collaborate with operational stakeholders to translate operational workflows and policy mandates into structured KPIs and performance scorecards. • Conduct exploratory and descriptive data analysis to detect trends, system utilization gaps, and longitudinal performance shifts. • Prepare recurring executive briefings, compliance summaries, and ad-hoc data extracts for leadership, legal, or oversight reviews. Data Governance & System Integration: • Partner with enterprise IT to reconcile discrepancies between front-end data entry applications, legacy administrative systems, and centralized data warehouses. • Contribute to standardizing data dictionaries, field mappings, and master data management practices across diverse operational units. • Document data extraction methodologies, reporting logic, and pipeline workflows to ensure institutional continuity.
